My Thoughts

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Come Join the Murder was a difficult, dark read that has been written beautifully. Fans of the horror genre will relish it.

The grief and pain of a mother who has lost her son is described in such vivid detail that I could feel my heart twisting in anguish. Perhaps I could feel it more because I have a four-year-old child, too.

The author takes a cold, matter-of-fact look into the psyche of a man who kills for pleasure. The convoluted workings of his mind are laid bare for readers. It is not easy to internalize how nature and circumstances transform a human into a monster–and such monsters live among us undetected.

The story is told from the point of view of Rebecca, a working mother, who discovers that her husband and son are missing. Later, her son is found dead. At this point, she decides to exact revenge. How she goes about it forms the bulk of the book and it is fascinating to read the various scenarios that play out in her head as she hunts her victims down.

I found this technique of replaying the last conversation between Rebecca and her husband particularly effective as it forces the reader to relive the murders again and again, thus deepening the agony, horror, and frustration one feels at the unfairness of it all.

A masterfully written debut by Holly Rae Garcia and one that I will unreservedly recommend to fans of this genre.

Thank you to the author and Blackthorn Book Tours for my review copy!

“This is a novel I would read and reread and recommend to others. Fans of vigilante and desperado revenge will delight in this horror story.” — Horror Tree.

Rebecca Crow’s four-year-old son is dead and her husband is missing.

Divers find her husband’s car at the bottom of a canal with their son’s small, lifeless body, inside. The police have no suspects and nothing to go on but a passing mention of a man driving a van. Guilt and grief cloud Rebecca’s thoughts as she stumbles toward her only mission: Revenge.

James Porter knows exactly what happened to them, but he’ll do anything to keep it a secret.

James didn’t plan to kill Rebecca’s son, but he’s not too broken up about it, either. There are more important things for him to worry about. He needs money, and his increasing appetite for murder is catching the attention of a nosy detective.
